Synopsis

Walking alone with my camera trying to inhabit the city of Bucharest, I met Cristina Dan, an activist, who with her husband Alexandru Dan, leads a campaign to restore peoples’ faith in their qualities. With their project “Români Sunt Frumosi”, they roam the city asking people to write on a notice board a Rumanian quality, thus trying to combat the crisis and the widespread sense of disillusionment and distrust in the country. In this video Cristina, who is ‘an anonymous’, like any inhabitant of the city’s highrise buildings’, proclaims the text they give to each person who takes part in the campaign.

Artist Statement

I’m not Alone is a video made in Bucharest during the residential arts project “Engage 2012”. It’s a work born out of reflections on being an insider/outsider. I was a foreigner, an outsider, on my first visit to a city about which I knew almost nothing. I walked, head tilted back to photograph the imposing tower blocks built during the communist era. Huge billboards everywhere and innumerable shopping centres make Bucharest a city that is deeply marked by the short circuit between its past and its present. Here and there, in the central squares, there were outbreaks of revolt. In this country, communism and capitalism have both failed. The latter came as a form of exploitation and colonization, creating a sense of disappointment and despair amongst the population. I kept meeting people who only complained and at some point I started to look for someone with constructive energy. I met Cristina and Alexandru Dan, two enlightened activists who believe in the projective power of words and in a revolution that can only start from personal evolution. I began to follow them during their campaign to give people faith in their qualities. Every afternoon after work, Cristina, an archivist, and Alexandru, an unemployed engineer, go around the city with a bulletin board on which they ask people they meet to write a quality of Rumanians. This is why the project is called: “Rumanians are beautiful”. In return they offer an origami on which is drawn a mandala, a brooch with the colours of the Rumanian flag and the text “Nu sunt Singur”, written by Alexandru and performed by Cristina in the video shot at her parents’ home, where they lived, in the neighbourhood of Colentina.

En marchant seule avec ma caméra en essayant d’habiter la ville de Bucarest, j’ai rencontré Cristina Dan, une militante qui, avec son mari Alexandru Dan, mène une campagne visant à redonner de la confiance aux gens sur leurs qualités. Avec leur projet « Români Sunt Frumosi », ils parcourent la ville en demandant aux gens d’écrire sur un tableau une qualité du peuple roumaine, en essayant ainsi de lutter contre la crise et contre le sentiment général de désillusion et de désespoir vis à vis de leur Pays. Dans cette vidéo Cristina, qui répresente «un anonyme», comme tous les habitants des grands batiments des quartiers populaires de la ville, proclame le texte qu’ils donnent à chaque personne qui participe à leur campagne.

Camminando da sola con la mia videocamera, cercando di abitare la città di Bucarest, ho incontrato Cristina Dan, un’attivista che, insieme al marito Alexandru George Dan, conduce una campagna per ridare alle persone fiducia nelle proprie qualità. Con il loro progetto “Românii Sunt Frumoși” (i rumeni sono bellezze), Cristina e Alexandru vanno in giro per la città chiedendo alla gente di scrivere su una bacheca una qualità dei rumeni. In questo modo cercano di combattere la crisi e il senso di disillusione e sfiducia diffusi nel Paese. Nel video “I’m not alone” (in rumeno “nu sunt singur”), Cristina, che rappresenta un “anonymous”, un qualsiasi abitante di uno dei tanti palazzoni della città, declama il testo che viene distribuito a ogni partecipante della loro campagna.

Artist Statement

I’m not Alone è un video realizzato a Bucarest durante il progetto di residenza artistica “Engage 2012”. E’ un lavoro nato riflettendo sulle categorie di inside/outside. Ero straniera e appena arrivata in questa città di cui non conoscevo assolutamente nulla. Ero totalmente outside. Camminavo con la testa all’insù fotografando gli imponenti palazzi costruiti durante l’epoca comunista. Gli enormi cartelloni pubblicitari ovunque e gli innumerevoli centri commerciali fanno di Bucarest una città profondamente segnata dal corto circuito tra il suo passato e il suo presente. Qua e là, nelle piazze centrali, c’erano focolai di persone in rivolta. In questo paese, il comunismo e il capitalismo hanno fallito entrambi. Quest’ultimo è arrivato come una forma di sfruttamento e colonizzazione creando nella popolazione un senso di delusione e disperazione. Continuavo a incontrare solo persone che si lamentavano e a un certo punto ho iniziato a cercare qualcuno che avesse un’energia costruttiva. E’ così che ho incontrato Cristina e Alexandru Dan, due attivisti illuminati che credono nel potere proiettivo delle parole e in una rivoluzione che non può nascere che da una propria personale evoluzione. Ho iniziato a seguirli durante la campagna che svolgono per ridare alla gente fiducia nelle proprie qualità. Ogni pomeriggio, dopo il lavoro – Cristina è archivista e Alexandru è un ingegnere disoccupato – la coppia va in giro per la città con una bacheca sulla quale chiedono alle persone che incontrano di scrivere una qualità dei rumeni. « Le persone hanno perso fiducia nel futuro e hanno smesso di credere in se stesse e nelle proprie potenzialità » mi dicono « Per questo motivo il nostro progetto si chiama « I rumeni sono bellezze », vogliamo rimettere in circolo le parole positive che sono andate perdute, vogliamo che le persone ricordino che siamo un popolo dalle grandi qualità ». A ogni partecipante, in cambio, offrono un origami su cui è stato prima disegnato un mandala, una spilletta con i colori della bandiera rumena e il testo « Nu sunt Singur », scritto da Alexandru e interpretato da Cristina nel video omonimo che abbiamo girato insieme, a casa dei suoi genitori, dove a quel tempo vivevano, nel quartiere popolare della Colentina.

It is several days since I am no longer alone. I feel as if I have woken from an exhaustive dream in which infinity seemed more certain than ever. I notice how patriotism abandons its fanatic tendencies and steps into an area of logic and common sense. I can see how the fun of trouble transforms into a deep and sublime happiness. I sense a revival of hospitality through developing self-trust and also trust in others. I feel that every moment of naivety I experienced prepared me for the good that follows, for the steps to be taken together with other Rumanians proud of ourselves. I discern a solidarity painted in warm colours, both at home and abroad. I observe how the artist in each of us blooms. I see how the obedient flock becomes a nation free in speech and optimistic in actions. I can hear sincere shouts of fraternity released towards a common conscience. I can feel in the air an energy beyond my capacity to understand which offers me the possibility of evolving. I see how heroism and courage create space to rise to the surface. I can see a bright future for us and for our children. I feel that the events of ’89 and ’90 were not in vain. I feel that none of the events were without a goal. I know that in this time the Dacians are proud of us for being their descendants and they are with us. They are proud because we fight for respect, for our belief in the country and for present and future values. And yes, we do deserve respect because we are humans, we are warm we are peaceful, we are outstanding, we are honest and, if we managed to reach this point, we are definitely survivors. It is a few days now that I live something beautiful, unique and special, but I am not alone in this. This is a communal work based on the beautiful, on evolution and on solidarity. It is simultaneously a long and pleasant journey, with an ending that is, for the moment, indecipherable, but is definitely gorgeous. I am glad to be a contemporary of so many beautiful Rumanians. E’ da diversi giorni che non sono più solo. Mi sento come se mi fossi svegliato da un sogno esaustivo in cui l’infinito sembrava più certo che mai. Ho notato come il patriottismo abbandona via via le sue tendenze fanatiche per approdare in un’area di logica e di buon senso. Posso vedere come il piacere della difficoltà si trasforma in una felicità sublime e profonda. Sento un rinnovamento del senso di ospitalità attraverso uno sviluppo della fiducia in se stessi e della fiducia negli altri. Sento che ogni momento di ingenuità che ho vissuto mi ha preparato al bene che sta arrivando, ai passi da fare insieme agli altri rumeni orgogliosi di noi. Distinguo una solidarietà dipinta con colori caldi, sia a casa che fuori. Osservo come l’artista presente in ciascuno di noi sta fiorendo. Vedo come il gregge obbediente diventa una nazione libera nelle parole e ottimista nelle azioni. Sento grida sincere di fraternità rivolte a una coscienza comune. Sento che i nostri sogni si trasformano in realtà ad ogni respiro preso. Sento nell’aria un’energia che va oltre la mia capacità di comprensione e che mi offre la possibilità di evolvere. Vedo come l’eroismo e il coraggio si fanno strada per emergere. Vedo un futuro luminoso per noi e per i nostri figli. Ritengo che gli eventi avvenuti nell’89 e nel ’90 non sono stati vani. Credo che nessuna cosa accada senza un fine. So che in questo momento i Daci sono fieri che noi siamo i loro discendenti e sono con noi. Sono orgogliosi perché lottiamo per il rispetto, per la nostra fiducia nel Paese e per i valori attuali e futuri. Ebbene, noi meritiamo rispetto perché siamo umani, siamo calorosi, siamo pacifici, siamo speciali, siamo onesti e se siamo riusciti ad arrivare fin qui, siamo decisamente dei sopravvissuti. E’ da qualche giorno che vivo qualcosa di bello, di unico e di speciale ma io non sono solo in questo. Si tratta di un lavoro comune basato sulla bellezza, sull’evoluzione e sulla solidarietà. Si tratta di un cammino lungo e piacevole nello stesso tempo, con una finalità che è indecifrabile per il momento ma che è sicuramente stupenda. Sono felice di essere un contemporaneo di così tanti bei rumeni. Grazie!
