A la fin du XIXe siècle, parmi les mille cheminée de la ville de Roubaix, il y avait aussi celle de l’usine de Victor Vaissier, un homme doué d’une inventive extraordinaire qui pour mieux lancer sur le marché son savon crée un univers de poésie et de légende. En interprétant lui-même ses campagnes promotionnelles, il se déguise en roi et il invente le Savon des Princes du Congo. Pour promouvoir son activité industrielle il fait aussi construire, à Tourcoing, un magnifique château en style orientaliste et il organise des fêtes démesurées, les cavalcades. Aujourd’hui à Roubaix il ne reste plus que 38 cheminées, celle de l’usine Vaissier est le seule vestige de cet empire mythologique désormais presque oublié. Dans Eruption of the end cette ancienne cheminée reprend vie. A travers les images reflétées sur les bulles de savon qui sortent de cette éruption finale, on peut voyager entre le passé et le présent. Les boulles de savon, lieu de la vision, réagissent au mouvement des visiteurs et montrent des images d’archive de la vie ouvrière et des images d’aujourd’hui, moment de transition et de changement. L’hymne de l’International, dont la musique a été composée à Lille un an après l’ouverture de l’usine Vaissier, compose la bande sonore de l’installation, avec des voix des ciné- journaux d’époque et des interviews actuelles. Eruption of the end est une oeuvre qui rendre hommage à l’activité des habitants du quartier et de la ville et à leur mémoire culturelle, est un mouvement, un geste à la recherche d’un contact entre nous et la vie d’un lieu qui a traversé le temps.

At the end of the 19^th Century amongst the city of Roubaix’s thousand factory chimneys there was also that of an industry made famous by one Victor Vaissier. He was a man gifted with extraordinary inventiveness who, by launching his soap in an inspired manner, created a world of legend and poetry. Inventing personally his publicity campaigns he assumed the persona of the King of the Congo and created his Soap of the Princes of the Congo. To promote his industrial activity he built in Tourcoing a magnificent castle in oriental style and organized festas, his cavalcades which outdid the carnivals of the period. Today only 38 chimneys survive in Roubaix. Victor Vaissier’s chimney together with the gatehouse of his castle are the only remaining vestiges of a mythical empire, now, alas, forgotten. In The Eruption of the End his historic chimney comes back to life. In the images reflected in soap bubbles that issue from it in a final eruption one voyages between past and present. The soap bubbles, the medium for the projected images, react to the movement of viewers, showing archive footage and photos of the life of industrial workers of the past. As the visitor draws closer to the screen the bubbles reveal images of the present. The socialist anthem The Internationale, the music for which was composed in Lille barely a year after the opening of Victor Vaissier’s factory, provides the soundtrack for the installation, along with voices from period newsreels and contemporary interviews. The Eruption of the End pays homage to the lives and work of the people of this place and to their cultural heritage. The work recounts a process, and is the expression of the artist’s search for contact with the life of a place and its historical experience.

Alla fine del XIX secolo, tra le mille ciminiere della città di Roubaix, c’era anche quella dell’industria di Victor Vaissier, un uomo dotato di un’inventiva straordinaria che per lanciare in maniera innovativa il suo sapone (il primo sapone profumato di Francia !) sul mercato, aveva creato un’universo di legenda e di poesia. Interpretando personalmente le sue campagne pubblicitarie, Vaissier si traveste da re del Congo e inventa il Sapone dei Principi del Congo. Per promuovere la sua attività industriale, fa anche costruire a Tourcoing, un magnifico castello in stile orientalista e organizza delle feste smisurate, le « cavalcades », simili a dei carnevali dell’epoca.
Oggi a Roubaix non restano più che 38 ciminiere, quella dell’industria di Victor Vaissier è la sola vestigia sopravvissuta a quest’impero mitico caduto nell’oblio.
 In « Eruption of the end » quest’antica ciminiera riprende vita. Attraverso le immagini riflesse sulle bolle di sapone che escono da questa eruzione finale, si può viaggiare tra il passato e il presente. Le bolle di sapone, luogo della visione, reagiscono al movimento dei visitatori mostrando immagini d’archivio della vita operaia di un tempo e, al di là di una certa soglia di captazione, rivelando immagini del presente di oggi.
L’inno dell’Internazionale, la cui musica è stata composta a Lille un anno dopo l’apertura dell’industria di Victor vaissier, compone la colonna sonora dell’installazione, insieme a voci di cine-giornali d’epoca e interviste attuali.
 »Eruption of the end » è un’opera che rende omaggio all’attività industriale del quartiere e della città e alla sua memoria culturale. E’ un movimento, un gesto alla ricerca di un contatto con la vita di un luogo che ha attraversato il tempo.
